hen you re using compression, you should consider what kind of content you re working on. Voice content is very compression tolerant. We re used to hearing news broadcasts and radio shows with a fairly significant amount of compression. Advertisements are even worse (see the Compression: How Much Is Enough sidebar). Music, however, is a different case. When we apply compression, we re narrowing the dynamic range of the audio, and the side effect is to bring up the bottom end of the content. Obviously, this changes the sound. If you re using music in your podcast, you really have to ask yourself whether this is what the artist would want. Chances are good that the artist spent hours, if not days, getting the sound of the CD just right, and here you are changing it by applying additional compression. Because you re reducing the dynamic range, the instruments and voices will be squished together. The tonal character will change. It will sound different. This may not be a problem, and in fact, you shouldn t worry about it too much, because all radio stations compress their broadcast signal as a matter of course. This is why songs sound different when you re playing them at home on your stereo compared to how they sound on the radio. They re not compressed at home! Applying a bit of compression to your music is okay, but don t go overboard. As an exercise, you really should open your favorite song in your audio editing software and play around with different amounts of compression. Sure, it s fun, but it s not something you d want to do to all your music. Stick to very light ratios (1.5:1 to 3:1 at most) and high thresholds, so the effect is minimal.
